The South African Police Force invites members of the community who are energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit and committed to the desire to volunteer their country as reservists to help the South African Police fight crime.
A reservist performs a voluntary task with the South African police without any expectation of receiving compensation for such a task.
In accordance with the regulations of the South African Reserve Police, you may be called upon by the National Commissioner to perform duties to strengthen and assist the police in carrying out its constitutional mandate as set out in section 205 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and that you will not receive any compensation (unless so called). You are expected to do a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of voluntary work per month.
Basic appointment requirements:
RESIDENCE: Must be a South African citizen from birth AGE at least 20 and under 50 years of age documentary evidence to be provided
MEDICAL EVALUATION: Fills out a health questionnaire at his own expense, which is confirmed by a national physician.
FITNESS: is medically mentally and physically fit to perform the duties of a reservist
CHARACTER: has a good and solid character, for which positive background information must be obtained
PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENT: fits the psychometric profile and has successfully completed another test that can be determined by the National Commissioner.
QUALIFICATION: Holds at least a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4, documentary evidence of which must be provided
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Can speak, read and write at least two official languages, one of which must be English
EXAMINATION PROCESS: allows his or her fingerprints and DNA sample to be taken, an assessment questionnaire to be vetted or screened
TRAINING: Is prepared to undertake training which may be determined by the National Commissioner
PRESCRIBED OATH: Willing to take the prescribed oath of office
RETURN AGE: Understands that his or her services may be terminated at age 60
EMPLOYMENT: Work is not a requirement, but salaried applicants are preferred. Provides proof of employment where relevant
PROOF OF STAY: Provides proof of his or her home address
CRIMINAL LAW: no criminal record or criminal or departmental cases pending with him or her (all criminal or departmental cases must be declared)
TATTOO: do not display tattoos that are visible when the person is wearing a uniform, which is incompatible with the purposes of the Service.
In accordance with the National Reserve Police 2014 Instruction3, the following are not considered reservists if he or she:
previously served in a government or other employment and was discharged as a result of misconduct or termination as medically inappropriate;
a former member of the police whose request for re-appointment was rejected due to negative considerations;
members of the Regular Force of the National Defense Force as referred to in Section 52 of the Defense Act, 2002 (Act No. 42 of 2002);
holds a key position as determined by the Ministry of Labor.
hold a post or office in a political party, organizational movement, or body;
is actively involved in politics or is a strong supporter of a political party and may violate the non-partisan nature of the police;
is a full-time or part-time journalist;
has no permanent home address;
is not effective;
Is a scholar;
is a bouncer or chucker out;
is a member of a municipal police force (including a local law enforcement officer);
is a sheriff or deputy sheriff;
is affiliated in any way with a brothel, escort agency or similar company;
is affiliated in any way with any company or industry that has contracted or tendered to the state to provide a service for the supply of a product to the police;
is involved in any way with – the private security sector (as director / partner or employee) / taxi industry (this includes but is not limited to the provision of a taxi service yourself, or the employment of another person, or the services from rewarding work for a taxi association, group or taxi owners or a single taxi owner) / liquor store or holding a tavern or shebeen / preparation or completion of applications for liquor licenses / private detection services (including but not limited to follow-up work) as an agent, lender, debtor or financial institution, carrying out private investigative work, intercepting communication or planting el
